Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started in 1919. The company was originally established by an engineer Anton Raky. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The first name of the company was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
In the year 1937, the cornerstone for SMAG was laid when the manufacturing facility was obtained by the Salzgitter Group for constructing drilling machines. During 1986, the company purchased the grab product division from Peiner AG. Immediately after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the succeeding years. At present, SMAG is the market leader in the world, using grabs for agriculture, waste disposal, and worldwide cargo handling applications.
